With the medical advances, the average life expectancy has increased year by year. The following disability and dementia of the elderly is an important issue for the society cannot be ignored. Therefore, Health and Welfare Department promotes the physical and mental health of the elderly in the community through the prevention and delay the onset of disabilities programs. Among them, the active of nostalgic music therapy is for the elders to familiar with old songs and physical movements to stimulate the senses of the elders for enhancing their social interaction and health of body and mind. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of cognitive ability and self-reliance on the middle-aged and elderly people by nostalgic music and physical activities. The research method is conducted by 39 people (12 males and 27 females) who are over 55 years old for a 12-week nostalgic music therapy course twice a week and two hours for each time. Before the start of course, the elders will have a test for SPMSQ and Kihon Checklist, and also they will take these tests again to analyze the effectiveness when they finish the course. The study result showed the pre-test of SPMSQ for cognitive ability’s average was 1.3, and the standard deviation was 2.166, and the post-test’s average was 0.59, the standard deviation was 1.618; the T-value was 4.172 and P-value <.05 of their cognitive ability on SPMSQ. It showed the participants’ cognitive ability has been significantly improved and the differences between the pre-test and post-test. In addition, regarding to the Kihon Checklist, the nutrition and motor function, the oral function, the social autism, depression, and dementia have been progressed. The pre-test and post-test showed significant difference. The Kihon Checklist was divided into five risks to analyze, but there is no significant difference between independent living function and dietary nutrition. However, the risks for comprehensive, oral function and depression have significantly difference. It showed this nostalgic music program have achieved remarkable results for the elders cognition, self-reliance and social participation and be recommended it can be widely promoted in community care centers to improve the elderly’s the quality of life.
