Researchers and experts found that young adult learners can effectively enhance their language skills through video. In Taiwan, however, few studies have been carried out to investigate video learning from the perspectives of language learners. The purpose of the study therefore is to explore what language skills English-majored students would like to improve through video and what criteria they use to choose video for English learning.
A group of 40 junior students were recruited from the department of Applied English at a technological university in Kaohsiung. The participants were asked to fill out a two-part questionnaire consisting of 22 questions, which focused on 12 English skills and 10 video selection criteria. In addition, an oral interview was conducted to explore students’ views on learning English through video.
Two major findings were found in this research. First, most of the participants reported that they would like to improve the 12 major English skills through video. In particular, the Top 3 English skills they wanted to enhance were the listening skill and the pronunciation skill (Top 1); overall English proficiency and cultural knowledge (Top 2); and the communication skill (Top 3). Second, the participants thought that all of the 10 criteria were important or very important for video selection. The Top 3 criteria chosen by the students were ‘Interest’ (Top 1),’Content’ (Top 2) and ‘Clarity of Message’ (Top 3). Important pedagogical implications were addressed based on the current findings.
