His music has a sense of freedom in rhythm and a rich harmony, breaking the form of the traditional rules, thus added a new flavor for the French music. Tzigane uses the form of the“Csardas”- a Hungarian folk dance. The first half is the free, lyrical section, the second half is the energetic, rhythmic section. This piece fully reflects the bold and unconstrained character of the gypsy style. Due to its inspiration from Niccolo Paganini’s 24 Caprices, op.1, Tzigane contains a variety of virtuosic techniques, such as: harmonics, double-stops, and left hand pizzicato. It was premiered in London in 1924, by violinist Jelly d’Arányi and pianist Henri Gil-marchex. This thesis is divided into four chapters: the first chapter describes the research motives, purpose, research scope, and methods of the research; the second chapter narrates the life story of Ravel and the compositional background of Tzigane; the third chapter is the analysis and musical interpretation of Tzigane; the last chapter is the conclusion of this thesis.
