And with the increase of population density as cities developed, high housing price becomes common in urban areas, which breaks traditional Chinese family living pattern, where three generations live together under one roof. Accordingly, the care for the elderly is an issue in urban areas. The introduction of long-term care facility provides a solution to this detriment. However, while long-term care facility is an important part of urban elder care system, the study of environment and space of the facility is limited. To inquire the environment and space of the facility, literature review, field investigation, and interview were employed, as well as an environment matrix scale. New Taipei City, where there was the highest density of long-term care facility among Taiwan, was chosen to be the study area, with a focus on Xizhi District at the researcher’s convenience. Following results were found, and issues were raised for further discussion: 1.The quality of the environment was associated with the scale of facilities, however there are more than 80% facilities were small scale in urban area.. 2.Living room and dining space were in the same area, as most families in Taiwan. This space was also where many elders spend more than half of the day. Therefore, when designed this area, lighting and ventilation were critical points to be considered. 3.The quality of individual care was what being concerned the most. However, the opportunities for exercising and social activities were usually ignored. 4.There was no outdoor area in most facilities. However, either terraces or gardens provide a space for daily activities, such as gardening or meeting with family member. Moreover, it can also serve as a horizontal evacuation space. 5.There was not enough space for the elders to store their personal belongings, and managed a personality decoration as they wish to.
