Furthermore, researcher examined the effects of mediator on perceived parental expectations between parental attachment and self-esteem of only child in senior high and vocational schools. Questionnaire method was applied to collect data in the study. The subjects were consisted of 186 only child students and 1334 non-only child students, who were selected by stratified randomly sampling from 14 senior high and vocational schools in the central Taiwan, including Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin and Nantou. Three questionnaires were used in the study, which include Inventory of Parent Attachment, the Self-Esteem Scale, perceived parental expectations Scale. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test and structural equation modeling.The results of this study were summarized as following: 1. Parental attachment of only child in senior high and vocational schools are moderately high. 2. Self-esteem of only child in senior high and vocational schools are moderately high. 3. Perceived parental expectations of only child in senior high and vocational schools are moderately high. 4. There is no significant difference on parental attachment, self-esteem and perceived parental expectations of only child and non-only child in senior high and vocational schools. 5. The results of structural equation modeling indicated that parental attachment of only child in senior high and vocational schools have direct effect on their self-esteem and perceived parental expectations, however, their perceived parental expectations have no significant mediation effect between their parental attachment and self-esteem. Based on the results and discussions, researcher provided several comments and suggestions for only child and their parents, educational practice, counselors and further relative research.
