A cross-sectional study with convenience samples technique was conducted, and the instruments used in this study included personal backgrounds, and four structured questionnaires: Stages of Recovery Scale, Self-Stigma Scale-Chinese Version, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Brief Symptom Rating Scale. A total of 255 valid questionnaires were collected from ten community rehabilitation center and recovery home in northern, central and southern Taiwan. The results showed that: (1) concerning background variables, education level, employment situation and living situation of participants had significant differences in recovery stage; (2) concerning disability-related variables, disability level and mental symptoms of participants had significant differences in recovery stage; (3) all psychological variables such as self-stigmatization, self-efficacy, brief symptom rating show significant difference, and a significant positive correlation between recovery and self-efficacy for people with mental disorders ; and (4) the educational level, full-time employment, work training, housing status and self-efficacy were identified as important predictors of recovery outcomes. According to the results of this study, clinical professionals or community practitioners can help patients with chronic mental illness to achieve better recovery and life with the use of provision of employment and job training opportunities as well as improvement of mental symptoms and self-efficacy.
