Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 財務金融學系所 === 107 === This study examines the relationship between family firms and earnings management behavior. Moreover, we discuss whether corporate social responsibility constrain family firm earnings management. Using evidence from Taiwan listed firms from 2014 to 2017, we separate our sample into family and non-family firms. Furthermore, by utilizing discretionary accruals and real earnings management as two proxies of earnings management, we find that family firms are less likely to use accrual-based earnings management than non-family firms. Nevertheless, family firms have greater incentive to manage earnings through real activities. Our empirical results also indicate that family firms which are more socially responsible have less real earnings management compared with family firms which do not meet the same social responsibility criteria.
