An experienced railway went through the century of coal railway and passenger transport service, then the function of Taolin Railway has been gradually falling because of the construction of Taipei Harbor. In 2005, Taoyuan County Governor Chu Li-Lun chartered trains from Taiwan Railways Administration, MOTC in order to carry passengers. Due to the passenger transport was the pilot project, there were just two trains going back and forth per day. By the way, because the work of freight train was busy on weekends and there were no passenger demands in holidays, so the passenger trains have been suspended during these special times. According to the above reasons, resulting in the Linkou branch line formally became the history in 2012.
Taolin Railway has started to carry coal and cargo since 1968, and it has started to carry passengers since 2005, then finally canceled its services in 2012. Recently, it was being unmanned managed like many historical relics. The same as Xinbei Pingxi line, Xinzhu Neiwan line, and Taolin Railway all served for carrying various raw materials, their fates were totally different, those lines kept continuing the life of railway and generating light and heat, but unfortunately, Linkou line was finally dismantled.
These precious memories and cultural value once have been dismantled would never be repaired. Because the past function of Taolin Railway has little connection with people, so the culture workers and community development association worked together not only to advocate the preservation of Taolin Railway cultural assets to government but also to try to host some events in order to make much more connection between Taolin Railway and both Taoyuan citizen and community. The purpose is looking forward to arising the memory of people with Taolin Railway and their fantasy and potential to Linkou line, hoping that one day can let Linkou line restart and keep serving for everyone.
Currently, Taoyuan has been promoted to a municipal city, although the population of Taoyuan surged in a jiffy and the constructions are increasing, but compare with other five cities, Taoyuan still doesn’t have a completely and quickly traffic network. By the way, the plan of the metro route is similar to the line of Taolin Railway. Looking at the concept of urban planning public welfare policy, how should the Taolin Railway transform can balance cultural and public interests is an issue we deserve to pay attention to.
