Summary: | 碩士 === 華梵大學 === 中國文學系碩士班 === 107 === Dream of the Red Chamber, one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, is generally acknowledged to be the pinnacle of Chinese fiction. The novel depicts a huge cast of characters with realistic, multi-dimensional portrayals, and a detailed observation of the life and social structures of a real 18th-century Chinese society.
The main character of the novel is the carefree adolescent male heir of the family, Jia Baoyu, who possess various traits and characters that are contradictory in nature. The objective of this study is to utilize modern psychology principle in analyzing Jia Baoyu’s upbringing process as well as understanding the people and environment that influence his character, including his family of orientation, his relatives and friends, his maids and servants.
Modern psychology principles utilized in understand Jia Baoyu’s behaviors and its underlying causes are based primarily from Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology, as well as from Sigmund Freud and Erich Fromm to a lesser extent. The study also used wide range of common sense from cultural, social perspectives in trying to explain Jia Baoyu’s deviant and perplexing behaviors.
