Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 跨文化研究所翻譯學碩士在職專班 === 107 === Using the hermeneutic approach, this study aims to understand the role police officers play when they act as interpreters in the phase of criminal investigation, the attitude they hold and difficulties they may face. Through a purposive sampling approach, three police officers, prosecutors and lawyers respectively were recruited as research participants and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings of this project include:(1) role shifts of police officers acting as interpreters during criminal investigation process with suspects or defendants; (2) time pressure to secure interpreters, conflict of roles, and difficulties experienced by police officers acting as interpreters when they need to translate legal terminology. The following suggestions are therefore made and further studies proposed: (1) feasibility of police officers using foreign languages directly to conduct interviews; (2) comparative analysis of suspects or defendants’ interview video records and the written statements of such interviews (3) remedies for interviewees’ rights when they are subject to inferior interpreting carried out by police officers; (4) possibility of designing standard interview reports in foreign languages (5) providing motivation for police officers to improve foreign language capabilities; (6) improving police competence in conducting interviews via interpreters; (7) establishing a proper legal interpreting system.
