The motion picture industry converts and translates our imagination to films through the work of camera and construction of screenplay, and ultimately presents it to us in the physical manifestation of film. The existence of motion pictures not only entertains, comforts, inspires and cultivates us, but also generates massive economic activities and investment returns, both in the form of tangible and intangible rewards. The author analyzes how movie producers and audience both consciously and subconsciously utilize and maximize the Theory of Uses and Gratifications through the motion picture and the Winner of Oscars’ Best Producer of 2018 - The Shape of Water. From researches and in-depth interviews, she analyzes twenty-three reasons people take interests in films and how these individuals are fulfilled from market, entertainment, psychological, environmental scanning, societal, and cultural perspectives. Thus, further evidencing the interconnection between this theory and the motion picture industry. Success at the box office also reveals that the audience’s expectations have been satisfied and fulfilled on numerous levels. The movie industry are able to temporarily blur the lines between reality and imagination allowing the audience to experience and find spiritual fulfillment in watching a screenplay. This study also shows how movie producers’ sophisticated plotting and execution of a screenplay demonstrates the successful utilization and application of the Theory of Uses and Gratifications. The purpose of this research seeks to explain a motion picture’s essence, focusing on the fulfillment of this theory and how it is applied throughout the motion picture. Thus, there will be a need to examine the application of the Theory of Uses and Gratifications in other further motion picture innovations. Additional research will use other methods and develop more insights and values in the future.
