Yunqin Zhuhong is also widely known as Master Lianchi (Lanchi dashi 蓮池大師) at the end of the Ming Dynasty. Answer on the Forty-Eight Doubts of Pure Land is a short but exquisite treatise from XuangCang, X61, no.1158. Master Lianchi’s answers to each of the forty-eight questions those Yunqi Zhuhong’s lay disciple-- Deyuan德園 (Yu Zhunxi 虞淳熙) asked were clear and brief. Generally speaking, the main content of Answer on the Forty-Eight Doubts of Pure Land is about the situation and problems that Buddhism faced during that period and clarification on these problems. Through the classification and analysis of Lianchi’s short treatise, this paper seeks to understand the direction of his Pure Land teaching and theory, especially Pure Land and Chan and Huayen thought. This paper further explores Yunqi Chuhong’s integration of Pure Land and Chan and how he promoted the integration of “Nianfo” (chanting the name of Buddha) and meditation, whether the integration of “Nianfo” and medition influenced modern Humam Pure Land (rénjiān jìngtǔ人間淨土) and Humanistic Buddhism (rénjiān fójiào人間佛教). In fact, the Pure Land thought is always the main stream thought from the Ming to Qing Dynasty until now. This is especially so popular in modern times. This paper thinks that this may be because the practice methods and ideology are simple and easy to understand. Thus, Pure Land practice remains popular for modern people even though it has been almost five hundred years since Zhuhong’s time. Since the Ming Dynasty, how did the Pure Land thought transform and pass down? How did Pure Land thought integrate with meditation? When and how did this integration begin and continue? In the late Ming Dynasty, how did Yunqi Zhuhong actively promote it in Buddhism? On the other hand, what is the relationship between Yunqi Zhuhong and Yu Deyuan 虞德園—the editor of Answer on the Forty-Eight Doubts of Pure Land. Both were leaders of Buddhist followers in southeast China. Yu Deyuan was a student skillful at asking questions and Zhuhong was the excellent teacher able to answer his questions. If Yu Deyuan asks a good question, it is like to strike a bell loudly. This is an art of education in ancient China. The thesis comprises 5 chapters. The first chapter “Introduction” outlines the motive, objectives, problem awareness, ambits and methodology of this study, the study of texts and review of relevant literature, as well as academic literature. Chapter 2, There are Master Lianchi (Yunqi Zhuhong) and his apprentice(Yu Deyuan虞德園)their Life stories.Chapter 3, the Explanation and Analysis of“ Answer on the Forty-Eight Doubts of Pure Land (Da Jingtu Si-shi-ba Wen答淨土四十八問) ”. And according to these forty-eight items to understand Lianchi’s (Yunqi Zhuhong) teaching and practice.Chapter 4, the relationship of Answer on the Forty-Eight Doubts of Pure Land (Da Jingtu Si-shi-ba Wen答淨土四十八問) ” and the practice of Chan & Pure Land. Finally, Chapter 5 is the “Conclusion”. SHI, YUNG-DONG 釋永東 2019 學位論文 ; thesis 138 zh-TW
