Summary: | 碩士 === 朝陽科技大學 === 社會工作系 === 107 === This research explores the internal struggles of social workers from having depression and the impact of depression on social workers' work, interpersonal relationship and family. This study adopts narrative research and collects and analyzes relevant data to present the life story and its significance of social workers suffering from depression.
The researcher performs 14 in-depth interviews and narrative analysis with a social worker suffering from depression, and reaches the following findings: first, personal traits, family education, school education and workplace constructs interviewee' perceptions, definitions, rules and responsibilities of their social roles. Second, interviewee forms a frame for the cognition, definition, rules and responsibilities of their social roles, and continue to seek within the frame positive social evaluation. Third, the existence of depression is a kind of warning and reminder for interviewee, and forced to pull the interviewee away from the above frame. Fourth, when leaving the frame, the anxiety and insecurity that arises allow interviewee to rethink the meaning of their existence.
The results of the study show that the impact of depression on the family, interpersonal relationship and workplace of social workers has a great impact on exposing the long-term problems in the family, the transformation of roles in interpersonal relationships and the tolerance and support of colleagues in the workplace. When depressed social workers suffering from the conflict between social value and social workers' value, they choose to accept social reality and then released the stress by crying. When there were conflicts between professional values and personal needs, they consider their individual needs to be more important.
Six advices were provided as follow: First, self-care, cognitive of stress adjustment, resources of psychological counseling and medical treatment, interpersonal safety networks were very important to social workers. Second, social workers should take the courses about self-care. Third, the social welfare institution should intensify the friendly working environment and help the depressed ones return to work. Fourth, the relation of stress illness and job injuries of social workers should be clarified, to be the reference of occupational disaster compensation. Fifth, never take social worker as superhero. Sixth, separate depression from people so that you can see this person clearly.
