Female runners are even taking part in ultra-marathon races and many have received world-class results. Hence, the purpose of this study, which is based on a qualitative research design and hermeneutical phenomenology, is to understand more about female ultra-marathon runners by investigating their motivations and running processes. Data is gathered from 10 female ultra-marathon runners in semi-structured interviews and it is subjected to a thematic analysis. The results are categorized into five themes: (1) the expectation of a wonderful encounter; (2) challenges of multiple schemes; (3) to be brave and step outside the comfort zone; (4) facing a choice of dilemmas; and (5) self-betterment. The findings are expected to provide runners who wish to take part in ultra-marathon races with some references and suggestions and to encourage other runners to have the courage to participate in these races in the future.
