During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Rites of Zhou recorded dream interpreter system in Zhou Dynasty. The discourses upon dreams could also be found in Hundred Schools of Thought. Zuo zhuan was the pioneer of content of the dream of historic book. Unprecedented achievement of Records of the Grand Historian of Han Dynasty and Book of Han is the combined outcome of predecessors’ remarkable tradition, individuals and time. The Book of Later Han was completed in Wei and Jin Dynasties. Written from different historical perspectives, the Book of Later Han has a more flexible style of writing that broke the limits and opened up a new way of historical records. This research aims to discuss recorded dreams in the Book of Han and the Book of Later Han. By discussing and analyzing recorded dreams in Chinese historical books, we could induce the dreamer’s social status, content of the dream, how those dreams affected people’s lives in Han Dynasty, and the authors’ intentions of depicting those stories. What kind of idea were they trying to express? While studying recorded dreams, delving into the background of Han Dynasty is also necessary. In the years of Xin Mang, divination with mystical Confucianist belief was popular and it was converged with dream. Though many were living in their dreams and being superstitious, there were still many people having doubts and suspicions about dreams. Except for historians like Ban Gu and Fan Ye, Wang Chong and Wang Fu even became columnists and wrote their opinions on dream interpretation and fortune telling. Dreams that had been written in historical bibliographies were also become critical writing elements of Qu and many classical Chinese novels, and has now played an important role in Chinese Literature.
