Usually, the resin plays dual roles. For ex-ample, when adhering friable pottery, the adhesive may also partly consolidate pores in the ceramic body. With the passing of time, the resin will degrade gradually and may become brittle or yellow. However, past evaluation of the reversibility of resins has focused on whether the object can be disassembled for re-bonding. Also, the research on resin stabil-ity has been done on cast films, with far fewer studies on porous materials. Through using different porosity samples, different concentrations of resin in solution, and different aging treatments this study evaluates the reversibility of two resins - B-72 and cellulose nitrate. The results lead to the conclusion that the reversibility is dependent on the chemical and physical properties of polymer, the pore size distribution of the ce-ramic body and the type of ageing. B-72 has the best "reversibility” but no more than ap-proximately 50% of the introduced resin can be removed by solvent washing. Cellulose nitrate shows deterioration and poor reversibility.
