Nowadays, the way design workshops are organized is becoming increasingly diverse. Internationalized design workshops enable participants from different countries to engage in cultural exchange and learning and thus resolve challenges facing local communities such as environmental conservation and cultural inheritance. To enrich design talents in Taiwan as well as enhance and promote both local and international cultural and creative industries and craft professions, the Department of Creative Design at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology organizes an international design workshop each year and has done it five times so far. This researcher has been part of the design workshop team of this event as a participant since entering the Graduate Student Office as a first year graduate student in the hope of clarifying the design of this entire event through personal research and analysis. In the course of a literature review, models of design workshop organization as well as local and international cases of international design workshop organization were examined. Research methods involved the following. Interviews were conducted with participants in the 2015 International Design Workshop in Taiwan and the 2016 Burden Free Design workshop. The interview records were used as the basis for analysis to investigate the Past cases of design workshop organization were also analyzed. The PDCA model was used as the approach to continuous quality improvement, and features and differences of design workshop organization were compared to shed light on the implementation of future design workshop s, self-organized design workshop teams or planning of other related events.
The research results show the following. Design workshop organization acts as a platform and medium for cultural innovation in Taiwan. Whether true design workshop s can be successfully organized depends more on how students feel about participating in design workshop s. From the cultural perspective, organization of design workshop s is for students to have a better understanding of culture. However, it is more of an educational nature in most cases. As most design workshop s are education related, it is necessary to explore a design workshop from the angle of multiple aspects to know whether it is a good one, whereas cultural exchange and related issues are only a small part of it. Successful organization of a good design workshop is also a great help for the local community and makes it more likely to attract participants in the future. It is hoped that the results of this study can make the implementation of Design Workshop s and planning of related events smoother and serve as references for organization of other Design Workshops.
