Abstract
It is truly a long and tough journey in Taiwan to become a world renowned professional athlete. The writer is now a member of the women national tennis team in Taiwan, with the Gold Medals of Women’s Singles from Hong Kong East Asia Games in 2009 and Gwangju Summer Universiade in 2015 (Women’s Team Gold Medal); Bronze Medal of Women’s Singles from Taipei Summer Universiade in 2017 (Women’s Team Gold Medal). After the writer injured in the Osaka competition in November 2013, she began to reflect on her past and decide to continue the journey as tennis professional.
The thesis was organized in four parts. First, learning tennis as a kid. The journey of being tennis professional was rooted from the writer’s father. The story departed from the discrimination and hardships while first trained in the U.S. Second, the different professional cultures between the east and west. While overcoming various hardships in training, the strengths eventually turned to be the passion of becoming a professional tennis player. Third, walk toward the vision. This part emphasized on the career as tennis professional. The writer’s elder brother gave up the way to become a tennis professional to support her as the mentor and coach. Although the path was not smooth for the brother-and-sister, there were still generous sponsors to help them continue the vision. Last, the journey to success. After the writer regained self-confidence, it was also the time for her to re-confirm and re-acknowledge her passion to tennis.
The purpose of the thesis intended to not only self-reflect on the past experience, but also provided some inspirations to the players who might be going through the similar process. Hope this could become an encouragement and a positive role model to those-to-come in the field.
