While pre-service teachers are critical adults to serve this task, handwriting studies conducted on adults are rare in Taiwan. The purposes of this study was to examine whether there was a significant difference between the subjects that had received the handwriting teaching instruction and those that had received general teaching as to the effectiveness of learning. The study adopted quasi-experimental method and used pre-service teachers as the subjects who were recruited from two universities in Taipei. A total of seventy-one subjects participated in this study. Thirty-six were the experimental group and thirty-five were the control group. The experimental sequence of the study took 8 hours spread over four weeks, including a pretest, a posttest, and a deferred test. All of the participants were measured for their handwriting performance in the two tasks: near-copying Chinese characters and dictation. Two types of statistical analyses were used, which were the independent sample t-test and two-way ANOVA. Three of these findings were worth summarizing: 1.The handwriting performances of near-copying Chinese characters and dictation conducted on the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. 2.The two-way ANOVA indicated significant effects on the near-copying Chinese characters and dictation conducted on the subjects of different handwriting levels in the experimental group. 3.The subjects with different handwriting performance indicated that they could advance their handwriting performance by the multi-dimensional structure-space method of handwriting instruction. Based on the experimental results, this study provided some suggestions on handwriting instruction and research.
