The activities of art education courses in art museums are becoming more and more frequent and the forms are gradually diversified. However, limited by the actual situation, the private art museums in mainland China started relatively late and the art education curriculum activities have never formed systematic and targeted development from the point of view of the needs of the people. Based on the motivations of the public participation in art museums, this study discusses how to realize the social role and function of art education in art museums. The selected case in this study is 2018 Bologna Illustrations. The research field is the first private non-enterprise public welfare contemporary art museum in mainland China, which has made a breakthrough in art education since 2016, Today Art Museum(hereinafter referred to as the Today Museum). The main subjects of the study are children between the ages of five and eight in the Audience Experience Department of Today Museum - art education curriculum activities during 2018 Bologna Illustrations and parents who have accompanied them to Today Museum to participate in activities. On the one hand, the researchers clarify the development of the educational function of art museums, and the dilemma of art education in private art museums in mainland China at the present stage. On the other hand, researchers clear up the motivation theory and related research, confirm that the motivation of participation is behaviorism, humanism and cognition, and then obtain theoretical support as the research basis. The researchers observe and interview the participants through case study and understand the motivation and factors of participating in the curriculum activities through data analysis. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. The intrinsic motivation of participation due to the premise of learning. 2. The external motivation of participation arising from the premise of vanity. 3. The motivation of participation caused by the influence of the environment of art and literature. 4. The motivation of participation as a result of ability development. Some suggestions are made for the practice and follow-up research of public education activities in 2019 Bologna Illustrations.
