Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北藝術大學 === 戲劇學系碩(博)士班 === 106 === The Young Companion was first published in February 1926 and ceased publication in October 1945 after a run of 172 issues in total. It is a large-scale comprehensive pictorial, which covered all aspects of domestic and international affairs, introduced western novelty, and contained news about drama and art, etc. Its replacement of lithographs with photographs makes the magazine different. In the article "The Development of Chinese Pictorials", A-ying believes that The Young Companion has set off a new wave of revolution in the publishing world. In addition, The Young Companion is an important publication of "No one does not look, omnipresent, and sells all over the world", which shows that its influence is huge. On the basis of this, this thesis will examine The Young Companion as the main research subject.
At present, the research on The Young Companion mostly starts from visual images, and discusses women's gender consciousness, modern urban culture, art materials, character images and advertising communication. Not many related studies focus on the field of drama. Since the 15th issue (1927/05), The Young Companion had added a column of "Drama", which covered traditional opera, modern drama, film and other categories, showing its emphasis on drama. Therefore, this thesis attempts to use the drama images in The Young Companion as a cut-in perspective to complement the deficiencies in current research.
Few pictorials have been analyzed as the research materials from today's drama history. However, in the thesis, we found that The Young Companion published the content of traditional opera, including Peking Opera, Cantonese Operas and other local operas. In addition, it concerned about the news of the traditional opera’s actors. As for the content of modern drama, the magazine also covered the student theate in various university drama organizations, the modern drama group and its actors' dynamic attention, the peasant drama of Fu-xi Xiong, and the drama performance during the Anti-Japanese War. Moreover, there are related descriptions of overseas Chinese dramas, as well as introductions of Western dramas (such as stage design, performance records, etc.), which can be used to supplement the materials of the research on drama history, and opens up new perspectives for the future research.
