In contemplating the dramatic tension, musical-structural design and textual interpretation styles of the scene No.10 “Look to your left. Look to your right.”, No.11 “Miss Todd! Miss Pinkerton, won’t you sit down?”, No.12“Knock at the door. No answer.” and No.14“Laetitia! Where are you ?” of the Menotti’s one-act opera The Old Maid and the Thief, this paper aims at providing a thorough study on the female protagonist of this work – Miss Todd. Certain aspects including Menotti’s musical portrayal of Miss Todd and the music-drama relationship in The Old Maid are central to this study.
