Summary: | 碩士 === 淡江大學 === 管理科學學系碩士班 === 106 === The main purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between national competitiveness, world university rankings, and the number of international students of a country. It is hoped that conclusions of the analysis will provide insights to national administrative offices, academic institutions, or those who care about Taiwanese education.
Originally, this thesis intended to take the number of international students in a country as the analytical data. However, the information is difficult to obtain. Hence, the number of international students studying in Taiwan is used instead. The world university ranking data is based on Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The number of university ranked in the top 100 rankings and top 200 rankings are analyzed in the analysis. As for the national competitiveness data, the annual national competitiveness report published by IMD is adopted. Rankings for each country is coded into the data set.
This thesis applied nonparametric test to analyze the data. Basically, positive relationships are found among national competitiveness, world university rankings, and the number of international students in a country. Consequently, this thesis suggests that the pursuance of world university rankings or economically enhancing a country’s competitiveness in the world would enhance the motivation of foreign students to come studying in the country.
