In the past, natural rubber (NR), which is one of the most prevalent bio-based elastomer, was used as waterproof coating for many applications such as raincoats and tarpaulins due to its inherent elasticity, high tear and abrasion resistance, and hydrophobicity. However, natural rubber has significant drawbacks when applying to garments including its low adhesion strength to polyester fabrics, and low breathability. Polyurethane (PU), on the other hand, possesses high breathability but relatively poor elasticity. In this work, the potential for fabricating new fabric coating based on natural rubber latex (NRL) and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was investigated with the goal to provide high-performance bio-based fabric coating. NRL was vulcanized by using sulfur system. The water vapor permeability, water pressure durability and flexibility were investigated in this article.
