The AS method has the advantages in non-approximate solutions and simple calculations of diffraction wave propagation. The AS method was adopted in an iterative algorithm, called the iterative singular spectrum algorithm (IASA), to design diffractive optical elements (DOEs) for the 3D layered imaging. Four near-field sub-DOEs (at distances of 200, 300, 400, and 500 mm) for generating two-dimensional (2D) images were calculated using the IASA. They were interleaved to become a large DOE to be displayed on a phase-modulation spatial light modulator and to produce four 2D diffraction images without using any optical imaging components. The experiment results showed the four 2D images successfully constructed a layered 3D image. In the study, we compared two methods of generating and interleaving sub-DOEs.
