Main interior decoration tasks include demolition, masonry, woodwork, plumbing, electrical wiring, painting, system cabinet installation, etc. The ever-increasing types of innovation in materials and methods used in such projects are proof of the advancement of Taiwan's interior decoration industry. However, the materials used during interior decoration typically contain pollutants, such as formaldehyde and VOCS, especially for woodwork and painting. Workers on site are often exposed to such hazards for long periods of time, and the health risk they face due to harmful substances are just as serious as the potential injuries from operating machinery. Currently, the government has “labor safety and health management” regulations as safety protection measures for interior decoration workers, but they are insufficient in terms of protecting the workers’ personal health while requiring a safe working environment. This study conducted on-site investigation at three interior decoration sites in Kaohsiung City. A set of interview questions were built based on the researchers’ participant observation. Having interviewed senior site workers and compiling the survey results, the researchers proposed a set of safety precaution measures for interior decoration workers during the preparation stage and the working stage. The proposed measures can be used as the reference for future interior decoration projects. The conclusions of this study: I. Before the project begins, related on-site workers should all receive a physical checkup and pre-work training so as to raise their awareness of self-protection and personal health concerns. II. The measures for preparation and working stages include: the preparatory work by the general contractor and the design company, management by on-site supervisors, measures related to on-site workers, the protection measures on working environment and contingency plans. III. The existing Enforcement Rules of the Labor Safety and Health Law, as well as the suggestions made in this study focusing on personal health concerns, should be made familiar to the workers so as to reduce the health risks threatening them.   The research results are expected to become useful reference for future researchers on interior decoration topics and at the same time promote interior decorators’ awareness of their own protection and reduce harmful on-site pollutants and in turn ensure the health and safety of such workers.
