In general, health care professionals usually recommended to control their blood sugar levels through combinations of drugs, diet controls, regular exercises and normal lifestyles, for a healthy and quality of life. At present, diabetes was still the fifth leading cause of death in Taiwan, exluding those cardiovascular and renal that caused by diabetes. This indicated that diabetes control remains an important issue in Taiwan. The literature suggested that bitter melon help regulating blood glucose in humans, a bitter melon peptide, named as IRK19® was then developed through a unique and innovative process recently. This study was conducted to test the effectiveness of this material in regulating diabetic patient’s blood glucose in less-developed areas located in some coastal and mountainous lines in Taiwan. A total of 142 subjects who were diagnosed as diabetic patients were solicited, of which 64 were randomly assigned as experimental subjects and 78 as control. Subjects in the experimental group were provided with IRK19®; and the control subjects a comprehensive health education instead. Biochemical inspections were performed and data were provided by accredited medical inspection units on a regular experimental process during the three-month period of study. The results showed that bitter melon peptide starts to improve the subject's HbA1c levels at the end of second month (T2) with mean values significantly lowered from 7.8 ± 1.4% (T0) to 7.5 ± 1.4% (T2) (p=0.004), and continuously to 7.4 ± 1.1% (p=0.000) at the end of the experiment (T3). In the contradictory, changes of HbA1c levels for the control group were 7.5 ± 1.2% in T0 and 7.5 ± 1.1% (T3), and not significant different (p=0.852) in the same period. The current study provided evidence for the effectiveness of the captioned bitter melon peptide in regulating the subject’s glycated hemoglobin levels.
