The ROC Armed Forces also increased yearly the employment of women following the promulgation of the Gender Equality of Employment Act. However, the composition of the armed forces remain heavily represented by the male gender. When female officers and NCOs appear in military units that are predominantly male, the pressure of public opinion, family, physical stress and promotion becomes greater and more difficult to overcome than their male counterparts. For female service members, they are required to take up responsibility to household management while they serve their country as a member of the military. Facing the daunting challenges posed by the conflicting roles of a soldier and a mother, female members of the armed services face a difficult balancing act, and the imbalanced gender ratio in the hierarchical military environment will necessarily burden them with pressure from all sides. This study reviews literature concerning turnover intention, and uses a semistructured interview outline. The outline is titled "Interview Outline Studying Key Factors of Turnover Intention among Female Service Members of the ROC Armed Forces,” devised by the author and serves as the study tool to conduct in-depth interviews on discharged female service members. The study then uses content analysis to process data by coding and identifying themes. Lastly, the results are treated by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which produces a ranking of weighted categories for key factors affecting turnover intent among female service members in the ROC armed forces. The results of this study identify key factors affecting the turnover intention of female service members in the ROC armed forces, listed in the following: leadership style of commanding officers; organizational environment; personality traits; pressure from roles in work and family; career planning. From these results we can examine whether there is room for improving organizational environment in order to increase the retainment rate of female members of the ROC armed forces.
