Description
Summary:碩士 === 世新大學 === 經濟學研究所(含碩專班) === 106 === This study estimates Taiwan’s export demand functions. The dependent variable is the rate of change in Taiwan’s exports to each economy. The primary explanatory variables are the bilateral real exchange rate and the economic growth rates of the importing economies. Taiwan’s imports are also used as a control variable since Taiwan is an import-processing economy. Past literature has generally used simultaneous equations based on time series. This research uses panel data with fixed effects. The material analyzed consists of annual data from 2001 to 2016 for Taiwan’s eight largest trading partners. The trade of each partner is broken into 19 separate industries. As a robustness test, export volume is substituted for export value. The results show that the real exchange rate has no significant effect on exports and the important determinate of export growth is the economic growth of the importing economy. Furthermore, the change in imports from each industry in each economy significantly affects exports of that industry to that economy. This shows that Taiwan is an import processing economy.
