Summary: | 碩士 === 東吳大學 === 中國文學系 === 106 === In this essay, the center of discussions is the works of Wen Tong (1018-1079) from the perspective of his psychological change and experience in life as revealed in his work. The works of Wen Tong during the Qing Li Period and Xi Ning Period exhibited two distinctive styles, which are worth further comparison. Indeed, the transition from the Qing Li Period to the Xi Ning Period marked the watershed of his poetry style.
Wen Tong was not involved in the rivalry between different political factions at that time, which made him not a prominent figure of the mainstream literati of the Song Dynasty in the literature studies of most scholars. The Song Dynasty demonstrated the epoch of literatures and arts. Yet, most literatures tended to focus on the works and participation of the mainstream literati, including poems, verses and calligraphy. Likewise, literature and arts were naturally classified into the expertise of the mainstream poets and artists, and the seems to be far away from the chronicle of literary works. There was simply no systematic study of these literary works.
This study is an attempt to put together the missing parts on the study of Wen Tong in academe, which allows us to know that Wen Tong is not just a painter but also as poet in the study. In so doing, Wen Tong will be assigned a role in the history of Chinese literature and could shake off the yoke of study on only piece work as practised in the Song Dynasty. This would help us to understand the poet from different facets.
