Forty male 8-week old Syrian hamsters were divided into control and high-fat groups. Five animals from each group were sacrificed at week 4, 8, 12, 20 weeks to analyze blood parameters and intestinal microbiota. Animals of high-fat group were switched to control diet from week 12 to the end of study. The results indicate the concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol of high-fat group were significantly higher than those of control group. Microbiota analysis indicates high-fat diet promoted 6 strains by 2.3-90.5 folds, including Clostridium hiranonis which possesses activity of bile acid 7α-dehydroxylation, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii which ameliorates liver damage and adipose inflammation, Prevotella copri which alters insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, Bacteroides plebeius which are decreased in the intestine of obese subjects, Collinsella stercoris which are commonly present in human, rat, and hamster intestines, Propionibacterium acnes which is affected by blood lipid concentration. Two strains were increased by high-fat diet by 2.3-8.0 folds, including Desulfovibrio C21 C20 which induces colon cancer and Helicobacter apodemus which causes gastritis and gastric cancer. After stopping the intake of high-fat diet, the strains in animals of “high-fat” group were not significantly different from those of control group, except Collinsella stercoris was still lower in high-fat group.
