Description
Summary:碩士 === 實踐大學 === 工業產品設計學系碩士班 === 106 === Beyond the traditional system of production, the new generation designers have begun initiating small-scale productions with machines which were designed with the personal sense of beauty and the intention of environmental protection. The stiff image of high-skilled productions has been simplified, furthermore, liberated and used in the experimental process of their design project. By re-interpreting the artifacts which are made by machines with nature, the major meaning of products no longer comes from the market-side. It comes from the self-will and Philosophical conception of designers. With the trend of this era in mind, I collected several projects in the art and design field, and categorized them into two parts, which are ‘Machine in design' and ‘Experimental design features’. By analyzing the difference between cases, I established my philosophical statement and experiments in the design process of my project. It provides a way to proceed further with my machine design process and the experiments with the machines. It is an attempt at adapting ’The Heaviest Record’ which I made in Germany into product design: heating material with solar irradiation which is under control of machines, thus, I evaluated the outcomes from the experiments. I designed the lamps with the machine with experimental thinking instead of directly designing on the lamps itself. According to the results from different experiments, I built four sets of machines with different features. The common feature of them is melting materials, such as Wax, ABS, HDPE, Paper etc, by focusing solar irradiation with Fresnel lenses. Different results can be achieved with different focal length settings. After all the series of experiments, I made a series of lamps called ‘The Lamps of The Day’, including 'Morning', ‘Midday' and ‘Afternoon’. Lamella Dome was adapted in the design of the lamps with paper as a neutral, mathematic form due to my design approach. By observing the feature caused by the sun movement and the machine in the lamps, the readers could understand the non-market-oriented design thinking, furthermore, the philosophical perspective in the design. The critiques of the method in market-oriented design that I made are for pursuing the possibilities of progression and transcendence within a philosophical-thinking-based design process. After the discussions with professors and designers, I came up with the conclusion with a new point of views in design: 1. Experimental mindset driven design process, 2. Visualized creative intention as an explicit tool in the process, 3. Contextualize final result towards the design community.
