Travel Motivation, Satisfaction, and Support for National Defense of Civilians Participating in Open-House Activities of Military Bases

Various activities are held to stimulate the nationals’ patriotism and foster the solidarity of soldiers and civilians, realizing the ideas of public awareness, public support, and public participation. Open-house activities in military bases allow the general public to visit military facilities, directly enhancing the promotion of all-out defense education. In addition, the military can demonstrate the outcomes of military training and preparedness and encourage soldiers’ interaction with civilians through open-house activities, eliciting the public’s awareness of supporting national defense. This study investigated civilians’ motivation of participating in open-house activities and whether they had any expectation and affection toward the military, and explored whether the participants’ satisfaction with and overall perception of the activities enhanced their support for national defense. We examined the Intellectual Trip of National Defense held in 2017 and focused on the open-house activities in Cheng Kung Ridge Military Base in Taichung, Longtan Military Base in Taoyuan, and Hsinchu air base. Purposive sampling was conducted in the military bases to perform an on-site questionnaire survey, and a total of 712 valid samples were retrieved. One-way analysis of variance, factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were conducted for data analysis. The research results obtained are as follows: (a) the motivation to participate in the trip had a significantly positive influence on the degree of satisfaction; (b) the motivation to participate in the trip had a significantly positive influence on the participants’ support for national defense; and (c) the participants’ satisfaction with the trip significantly positively influenced their support for national defense. Accordingly, recommendations were proposed for relevant authorities and future research.
