By using Augmented Reality (AR) technique, an ARFood system was developed and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using this mobile AR system on college students' nutrition education. Energy and nutrient content of all the meals in one of the campus Chinese buffet restaurant were analyzed and recorded to the cloud software Aurasma○R and connected to the ARFood website. The user can use the mobile phone software to record and analyze their diet diary, and check out the relevant nutrition knowledge anytime. A questionnaire was also designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ARFood system on improving the consumer’s knowledge, attitude and practice. Sixty-five college students were recruited in this study. After a workshop on user protocol, the students were asked to use the ARFood system for one week, and then an interview was applied. Results showed that the total score on nutrition knowledge before use was 6.6 ± 1.3 points (the scores ranging from 0 to 12). After intervention, the total score was increased to 8.0 ± 2.2 points (p <0.000). The average score on nutritional attitude was 3.65 ± 0.43 and on practice was 3.43 ± 0.62 (the scores ranging from 1 to 5, 1: strong disagree; 5: strong agree). These findings suggest that nutrition knowledge is enhanced and nutritional attitude and food practice are improved positively by the use of ARFood system.
