Summary: | 碩士 === 中國文化大學 === 資訊傳播學系 === 106 === This research includes two parts. The first is to study how color expression affects the film, and the second is actually creating a movie. The author explores discusses and verifies how color expression could affect viewers’ feeling through the film - No Mother’s Day.
No Mother’s Day is a film which originated from the real life of the author and his mother. It discusses the issues of familial affection and death, presenting the spirit, love, and the lessons learned by using a combination of documentary, drama, video blog and docudrama.
Color expression is one of the media for storytelling, and it’s also the most important technique used to shape up No Mother’s Day’s atmosphere and artistic conception in this work. Meanwhile, No Mother’s Day was filmed with Blackmagic Cinema 4K. With DaVinci Resolve 12 for color grading, the hue, contrast, and saturation were tuned in different sections, with the aim of presenting the difference of color tonality in correspondence to the characters and plot. The adjustments mentioned above can also be seen as an experiment of color expression, which enables the plot approach to the author’s thought.
No Mother’s Day used “birth, illness, death, and spirit” as the themes of the story, and created different color expression styles to depict the main character’s alteration of mental conditions when facing different stages of life. In different stages of the story, distinct hues, contrast and saturation were used, and two different versions of No Mother’s Day were made in order to compare them with questionnaires. Sample t test was used to examine the different ways of color expression, seeing if the color expression could emphasize the feeling which the author wanted to convey to the viewers: showing ”happiness” in “birth”; showing “sadness”, “heaviness” and “depression” in “illness”; showing “regret” and “pain” in “death”; showing “love”, “joy”, “hope”, “tenderness”, and “memory” in “spirit”.
The research results showed that the ‘’sadness’’, ‘’heaviness’’, ‘’depression’’, ‘’joy’’, ‘’tenderness‘’ and ‘’pain’’ were obvious by comparing the two versions of films. It also corresponded to No Mother’s Day’s theme which could incite laughter and tears. This result confirms that color expression indeed affected the viewers’ feelings a lot. If designed the color expression in more intricate, multi-level, and varied way, this will definitely widen the horizons and give new vision to films.
