碩士 === 國立高雄大學 === 金融管理學系碩士班 === 106 === This study examines whether insurance companies in Taiwan use available-for-sale (AFS) securities as a proxy to manage earnings. Furthermore, this study analyzes whether earnings management will affect the performance of the insurance companies. The sample of examination periods is from January 2008 to December 2017. The results of this study indicates that the overall insurance industry in Taiwan does not have a significant earnings management on either taking a big bath or smooth earnings. The observations are further divided into two subsamples, which are the property insurance companies and the life insurance companies. The results show that life insurance companies use AFS securities as tools to smooth earnings. However, there is no evidence in the life insurance companies in Taiwan that take a big bath or smooth earnings by taking advantage of AFS securities.
