Under the principles of Aging In Place, if amenity spaces are designed to be accessible, encourage interactions, promote health, and provide protection, residents will be able to live in the same housing complex as they grow old and not have to move away from their home and community. This study uses two questionnaires to investigate the needs and design preferences of people from age 20 and above in Taiwan. The first survey uses Kano model with essential, somewhat essential, and nonessential categories to score and distinguish the ranking of the amenities. Result shows that accessible design, garden, shop, clinic, day-care center, and common room are essential amenities to have. The second survey asks the design preferences of the “essential” amenities from the first result. Result shows amenity space should possess design qualities including easy access and barrier-free, partial outdoor space, sense of shared identity and façade of various opacity. Additionally, an interesting finding is men and women have different preferences on the transparency of facade, reflecting their needs for different level of privacy in these shared spaces.
