During the Qing Dynasty, it was collected in the Imperial Palace and recorded in "Volume One of Shi Qu Bao Ji," and is now treasured in the possession of Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Regarding its age of painting, most scholars believe that it is Chen Rong's original work. However, after research and comparison, this dissertation will offer different points of view. Starting with exploring the evolution of the dragon pattern, the dissertation will sort out the histories and the artists of the dragon paintings. The development of Chinese dragon culture, its position in Chinese thought, and how it has been transformed and applied will be the key to classifying the dragon paintings to clarify the artist’s theme and thinking. Besides, the dissertation will sort out the long history of dragon paintings, whose historical context has long failed to be dealt with. The positioning and evaluation of dragon paintings in Chinese history will be discussed. Studying Chen Rong’s life, especially historical background and artistic style, will help clarify the historical position of Chen Rong’s paintings. Collecting as many Chen Rong’s dragon paintings as possible will accomplish a relatively complete table of Chen Rong’s art work. Researching the poems on the paintings and the catalogues including Chen Rong's paintings as well as comparing the names, topics with the genres of the paintings, the dissertation will find the most representative type to prove the new perspective. Analyzing the contents, forms, and reference allusions of inscription on the Nine Dragons scroll, and comparing Chen Rong's seals will help sort out the collecting history before treasured in the Chinese Qing Royal Family. The analysis of the structure and style as well as artistic style of the painting will explore the related questions regarding the painting. Based on the evolution of the style of dragon paintings and dragon patterns, and the classification of dragon paintings proposed in this dissertation, together with handed-down artifacts and archaeological data, the dissertation attempts to construct a relatively reliable Chen Rong’s work system, and deduces the possible age of the Nine Dragons Scroll.
