Even I took a train, a boat, or a motor-bus, if I went to Morocco for my holiday, if I suddenly arrived at Marrakech, I should be always in my room, at home. And if I walked in the squares and in the socks, if I gripped an Arab’s shoulder, to feel Marrakech in his person-well, that Arab would be at Marrakech, not I: I should still be seated in my room, placid and meditative as is my chosen life, two thousand miles away from the Moroccan and his burnoose. In my room. Forever.” in The Age of Reason. Was Sartre writing? Maybe not completely true, he was even thinking; am I making film? Not really, I’m even self-examining. I entered the department of Motion Picture for my first degree in this university in 2008. Finally, I’ve completed the long academic life from the graduate school in 2018. Time flies, my initially curiosity and eagerness about image have become my burden and duty. When I have more knowledge, I may become less pure; when I have more experiences, I may think less; when I have more honors, I may become less honest. After the activity of creating art led human to understand them more, does it either lead them to the lost abyss? During the journey of study filmmaking, my vision and awareness have been broaden through others’ works. I’m allowed to keep my own faith in associate, however, I lose myself sometimes in the intensive competitions toward the real society. Lost in Time is my last academic work in my life. It’ s an ending, but also a beginning. If Sartre was always think in his room, I’m reflecting myself behind the camera. I could have the ability of self-examination about my filmmaking life at this stage and kept making films in the future only if I get along with loneness. The dissertation records the background and the process of making Lost in Time. And through investigating between the world and my inner, I rise questions as their answers.
