PanoSlot: Improving Video Browsing for 360-Degree Videos

However, when searching the region-of-interests (ROIs) of a 360-degree video via conventional media players, users need to put attention on manipulating the camera view and the timeline slider, respectively, which increases the difficulty for 360-degree video browsing. We propose PanoSlot, a video scrubbing interface tailored for finding the ROIs in 360-degree videos. When the user scrubs the timeline slider, the interface displays a grid of thumbnails, where the row of thumbnails display the 360-degree keyframe from different camera directions, and the column of thumbnails stand for the timeline sequence of the corresponding camera view. This allows users to skim through both spatial- and temporal- domain of the 360-degree keyframe. By switching the cursor between the timeline slider and the thumbnail grids, our design allows users to manipulate the spatial and temporal-domains of a 360-degree video with a single mouse dragging. We compared the performances of PanoSlot and the existing video scrubbing mechanism utilized by YouTube. The result showed that PanoSlot enables users to reach the ROIs with less time-consumption and less workload.
