The minimum life cycle maintenance cost is considered in particular. In the study, the motor power system is divided into two major subsystems named the motor and the driver. Each subsystem consists of several key components. Based on principles of reliability engineering, quantitative reliability analyses are performed for components, subsystems and system. The results are then used for subsequent maintenance analysis. For those key components of the motor, this study collects numerous domestic and foreign literatures and/or documents to find their quantitative reliabilities. Necessary analyses are carried out therein. For key components of the driver, this study employs primarily the method documented in US MIL-HDBK-217F for reliability prediction of electronic equipment to find their reliabilies. A software package is also developed in parallel with the above analytic procedure. With regard to the optimal maintenance strategy of the motor power system, this study considers the minimum maintenance cost of the system. The life cycle cost of either a corrective maintenance or a preventive maintenance strategy is examined and compared. For corrective maintenance, only the minimum maintenance cost is considered. As for preventive maintenance, the degree of maintenance is considered as well. It is concluded by comparing the minimum maintenance cost of the two different maintenance strategies that preventive maintenance is better than corrective maintenance, and the optimal maintenance strategy is achieved by minor preventive maintenance with a short maintenance period.
