On The Performance and Inner World of Superpower Action Anime

博士 === 國立臺東大學 === 兒文所 === 106 === It seems as though contemporary animated TV series are prosperous and popular in mass culture, but their truly inner meanings and artistry haven’t been evaluated objectively. This essay focuses on superpower action anime and tries to research a genre by textual analysis. It intends to understand the performance and significance of animated TV series, limited animation, and superpower action anime. Furthermore, it tries to know the reasons why superpower action anime could be so popular and respond to the audience worldwide. Superpower action anime is belong to Japanese animation (anime) and is made by limited animation forms. Therefore, before analyzing the texts of superpower action anime, this essay organizes the historical developments and narrative styles of limited animation to understand the special narration and aesthetics within it. Then, this essay discusses nine texts by close-reading and frame-by-frame. Through the observation between the texts, this essay discovers that superpower action anime declares the importance of “human spirit” and imagines spiritual power to be concrete and particular in various ways. Responding to the needs of eras and the actions, superpower action anime gradually transforms from outer creative imaginations to inner spiritual explorations. Moreover, this kind of anime speculates how human being becomes an individual person through the process of characters’ adventures. The rising and the falling of human spirit are relevant with a person’s comprehending and practicing to goals, efforts, friendships, and consciousness. From the growing-up processes of protagonists, we can see that superpower action anime has a framework of becoming a person and this framework appropriately answers to the hopes of people nowadays. And, it answers why superpower action anime could be so attractive in the whole world. Furthermore, with the analysis of superpower action anime and limited animation, this essay suggests that we could use the phrase “limited-movement animation” instead of “limited animation.” The phrase “limited-movement animation” corresponds more with the attitude and aesthetic style while Japanese animated TV series arranging the dynamic movement. Hopefully, by the modification of one phrase, we could alter the conception and interpretation about this kind of artistic form.
