碩士 === 國立臺北大學 === 中國文學系 === 106 === Shijing is the earliest existing collection of classic Chinese poetry. However, there are already more than 250 distinguishable species of animals and plants in this book. In the modern times, even the Illustration of Plants in Shijing appeared. We can understand that Shijing includes names of a vast number of creatures, and describes their tie with the nature. Nevertheless, the ancestors had a variety of understanding of the living world. Due to the ancient religious and the agricultural production, they also had many kinds of considerations for the natural environment. Therefore, from the perspectives of “look-up”, “head-up” and “overlook”, this paper will explore the natural consciousness in Shijing and the relationship between the ancestors and the nature. There are five chapters in this thesis. Chapter one is introduction. Chapter two is about the natural consciousness of looking up in Shijing. Based on the fear of unknown natural phenomenon, coupled with the influence of animism, the ancestors had the natural consciousness of three categories: the fear of nature, the worship of nature and the learning of nature. Chapter three is about the natural consciousness of head up in Shijing, focusing on thoughts of respecting all the creatures in nature.There are two themes in this chapter which is going along with the natural trend and living in harmony with nature. Chapter four is about the natural consciousness of overlooking in Shijing. The fourth chapter focuses on the natural consciousness of measuring the value of species with economic benefits and this natural consciousness is kind of anthropocentrism. Therefore, this chaper divided into two themes of economic use and sustainable development. Chapter five is the conclusion and summarizes a variety of natural consciousness in Shijing.
