After Shi Lang attacked Taiwan in 1683, the Qing Dynasty was formally
incorporated Taiwan into the territory of China in the following year. In Fujian
Province, due to a lot of mountains and few farmlands, there was a ban on the
crossing of Taiwan Strait in the early Qing Dynasty. Early times who move to Taiwan
mostly were southern Fujian bachelor. After lifting the ban, the number of Cantonese
migrants to Taiwan gradually increased. However, most people generally do not know
that as early as in the Qing Dynasty in Taiwan, there were already cases of sodomy
and there were many cases of male homosexual crimes. Behind these cases are not
only the history of bitterness from the early immigrants to the grass roots society in
Taiwan, but also many cases related to the rampant piracy off the coast of Taiwan at
the time.
This paper mainly uses the official archives of the Qing Dynasty to discuss the
relationship between the reclamation of Taiwan and men’s style and the types of
men’s sentiment as well as their age and occupation. Piracy rages along the coast of
Taiwan and the resulting gay issues. In addition, these sodomy cases are also
discussed. The results of this study found that the majority of men in the emotional
style of money together. In terms of both age and occupation, sinner’s age is
predominately over 30 years of age, and sodomy is mostly in his teens to twenties.
Economically, the majority of be sodomy are still more vulnerable than sodomites.
This also reflects the hard life of Taiwan’s reclamation society during the Qing
Dynasty. Some Chinese who came to Taiwan make a hard-earned living by supplying
their daily necessities through an older person of better financial ability. Second, the
piracy of sodomy is considered a ritual of engagement, which requires the sodomy to
become a member of the pirate world. In general, the criminal responsibility of
buggery offender who committed crimes by soldiers and civilians in the Qing dynasty
were mostly sentenced "One month of flail, one hundred sticks". However, the
government also considered the age of those who were sodomy and considered the
case for the refused to sodomy, so as to reduce it more leniently than prescribed by
the Qing law. However, when it comes to piracy, the official sentencing does not take
into account that a person who is sodomy in a pirate ship is a last resort. "Since you
are on a bandit boat, that is, non-good kind" summarize the principle of criminal
convictions, and these people will be able to avoid the death penalty, but such
criminals will not be able to escape the crime.
