In order to understand this phenomenon and it’s connection to gender role, this study focuses on describing men’s help-seeking experience and their decisions of using counseling services or not. The author interviewed four male participants who had considered using counseling services. Combining Lee (2004), Lee & Lai (2009) and their reflection on Giorgi’s methodology, the author used hermeneutical-phenomenological approach and steps—describing action sequences, indexical expressions, contextual positioning, descriptions of situatedness as projects of being-in-the-world, the manifestation of constituent discourse, articulation of an integrative discourse—to describe the participants’ experience. As a result, 4 subprojects of living emerged and, the author used the word “control” to interpret the integrative discourse. In term of male participants’ help-seeking experience, 5 themes emerged, including “cause of predicament—low personal mental control”, “solution of predicament—analyze with reason and make concrete changes”, “evaluation toward counseling resources—expectation of precision, concreteness and effectiveness”, “reciprocation between positions—the client and the consumer”. In term of the connection between their help-seeking experience and gender role, 4 themes emerged, including “participants’ perception toward the influence of gender role─not relevant”, “control of mental state and reasonable direction”, “worries about being looked through and not strong─the dilemma between true feelings and gender role”. Findings are discussed in terms of theoretical and counseling implications. HUNG, LI-CHU 洪莉竹 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 224 zh-TW
