碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 表演藝術研究所 === 106 === This research aims for the analysis and interpretation of the protagonist Cheng-Po Chen in the Musical: CHEN Cheng-Po’s Life. The research is consist of 7 chapters, in the first chapter, motives and construction of the research will be demonstrated. Chapter 2 discusses the three composing elements of a musical that are seen in our target play, introducing the background of the story and our main character, Chen Cheng-Po, and the features of his artworks. The connections between Chen’s paintings and his various stages of life are also shown in this chapter to provide deeper knowledge of the designs of music, stage, and costumes in the musical. In Chapter 3, researcher will briefly go through the introduction of plotline, main characters, script analysis in order to gain better understanding of the lyrical meaning behind the composition of each song. Chapter 4 will be the focus of the research, researcher will conduct analysis on the protagonist Chen Cheng-Po based on the script, elaborating on his life with the development of the storyline, and hopefully, finding a new interpretation and the unexplored facet in this character. In Chapter 5, the 10 songs from the musical which are performed by the protagonist Chen Cheng-Po will be studied based on lyrics, hidden agenda, and physical emotions. Chapter 6 puts emphasis on the connections between music and choreography, researcher will analyze the choreographic patterns in the musical and discuss the definition of the styles that are used in the dance compositions. Out of the observation on the themes and forms of the dance moves, researcher attempts to recompose and create new characteristics on the original choreography. In chapter 7, researcher reasserts the conclusions of the previous chapters in hope for gaining a new insight when viewing other works of musicals in the future. Through this research, the ability of analyzing music, drama and their connections with the choreography are expected to be nurtured and employed in researcher’s professional field of theatrical choreography. In addition, the above discussions will also be benefiting for researcher to successfully master a given character later in his career of a professional actor, hopefully one day, Chen Cheng-Po, this spectacular and meaningful figure, would be seen more lively, more revered, once again on stage.
