It analyzes and discourses on the artist’s work, life, and mind in the period between 2014 and 2017, and transforms them into the form of letters. It also looks at the artistic creations and writings to discuss the ways in which the artist sorted out the direction of the intellectual quest of the artwork, as well as the interconnections among the stages in the trajectory of the artist’s career. This thesis consists of five chapters: Chapter 1, Introduction, states the objectives, methods, and details of the study of the rust series of artwork. Chapter 2, Developing Creative Ideas, recounts the inspirations and educational influences on the artist’s rust art. First, I was led to directly apply the idea of rust by the works of artists of earlier generations, such artists as Richard Serra (1939- ) , Georges Braque (1882-1963) , and Anselm Kiefer (1945- ). Next, in terms of art theory, the artist cites thinking from works of art on the relationship between the subject and the object, as well as an analysis of the ideas of memory and retrospection, to provide the foundation on which is performed a deep exploration of the artist’s own work. Chapter 3, Techniques and Forms, discusses the application of techniques and forms in the works. The technique for creating rust material in the works is done by means of sprinkling, grinding and rubbing. Their form makes especial use of the colors and the unique texture of rust. The structure and layout of the works rely on placing the image of rust in a one-point perspective at the center of the canvas, and thus presenting the rust as if it were a specimen. The works are displayed in the exhibition space by hanging on the wall, in addition to placing rusty scrap pieces on the ground near the work to emphasize the contrast between the sense of timelessness in the painting and the actual passage of time. Chapter 4, An Analysis of Works, analyzes three series in particular: “Records,” “What Constructs You,” and “The Bridge.” It interprets the representation of time and memory in the objects with rust as a medium. It also interconnects the objects, the rust, and past photographic records and, by means of the symbolism in the dotted lines of hand sewing, intertwines the reality and surreality of time and memory. Chapter 5, Conclusions, clarifies why rust is regarded as a carrier of the time and memory of the object as well as the interaction between the subject and the object in the development of the artist's creations.
