Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立清華大學 === 社會學研究所 === 106 === The Young Feminist Activism Group made their voice heard in China through numerous actions since 2012. Most of the activists in the group who identified themselves as lesbian or bisexual or did not specify their sexual orientation were from existing lesbian communities. Based on the data collected through in-depth interview, participant observation and textual analysis, this thesis aims to elaborate on the mechanism and process in which some young non-heterosexual women got engaged in the Young Feminist Activism Group and on how their activism has shaped those young women’s gender and sexual identities. This thesis points out that the pre-existing grassroots networks of lesbian was a major base for recruiting new members to the Young Feminist Activism Group. The recruiting channels of the Youth Feminist Activism Group were structured by the social relationship of their ‘’key persons’’ and by the inter-organizational cooperation between Young Feminism Activism Group and local grassroots networks of lesbians. By using new social media tools(e.g. Weibo), the Young Feminist Activism Group mobilized grassroots networks of lesbians and beyond effectively in a short period time. Viewing identify formation as a dynamic process, this study finds that the young feminist activists develop their individual gender consciousness and a collective feminist identity through a series of ritual, such as ‘’the Feminist camp’’ or performance art. Through their activism, a new queer community is formed with a gender culture which sees sexuality as a rather fluid practice. Their ongoing activism, changing gender and sexual identities made it possible for the Young Feminist Activism Group to continue to operate.
