In the past five years, the number of independent travelers and the number of suitcase shipments have increased remarkably. This shows that a suitcase is a key item for traveling. This study aims to explore independent travelers’ needs for a suitcase and the common problems they encounter using suitcases. Quota sampling was used for delivering questionnaires at the arrival and departure hall in the Taoyuan International Airport. Through free-listing, respondents were able to freely express their demands and preferences, anticipated functions, and features that need to be improved or modified, for suitcases. The ANTHROPAC software was used to calculate the salience index. The value of the index was between 0 and 1, and the higher the value indicates that the item is listed the earliest and most frequently. The results showed that the biggest problem related to inconvenience while using suitcases was the loss of suitcases. The most-wanted additional demand of suitcases was to be used as a chair. In addition, different age groups showed differences in their demands and needs of suitcases. Further research is needed to focus on improving the functions of suitcases, such as designing suitcase covers to solve problems and needs.
