Taiwan''s manufacturers are currently facing fierce competition from other manufacturers in the world. How to obtain competitive advantage in the effective control of material sources, manpower quality, and quality management will be the main purpose of this study. This study takes Porter’s “Diamond Model” theory: the four major elements of factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, corporate strategic structure and competition , and the two major factors of government and opportunity, as basics of competitiveness comparison of special metal materials pressure vessel manufacturers for Taiwan and China. Simultaneously, use Potter''s Generic Competitive Strategies to explore the situations that the case companies may encounter. Furthermore, in-depth interviews with the heads of pressure vessel business of eight petrochemical plants and three internationally notable material suppliers, we can learn about the performance of Taiwan''s special metal materials pressure vessel manufacturer in technology, quality control and related supporting industries are better. However, China''s special metal materials pressure vessel manufacturing plant is leading the country in terms of factors of production, demand conditions and opportunities. Based on this study, it reveals that equipment suppliers in the petrochemical industry are restrictive, newcomers cannot easily access it. They must be certified by professional organizations and have sufficient experiences to be approved by the owners. The following directions are for newcomers that interested in this field: 1. Obtain certification from international professional organizations (such as ASME, NBIC, etc.). 2. Possess the source of reliable and competitive materials. 3. Build brand value.
